Last week I got an email from the founder of another women’s entrepreneurial group – basically a direct competitor – reaching out to talk and potentially collaborate. There are so many thoughts that go through a business owners mind when “the competition” rears its head. The “higher” me thinks, “wow, cool, others are building entrepreneurial communities and doing it in a cool way like we have.” But there’s that shadow thought that feels more like “what if they do it better? What if we should just give up and give in to the fact that people don’t have time for live events anymore? How many women’s groups can really survive? What if the world is just shifting to be totally online? What if my customer loves us but is just too busy?”
Competition is a huge factor in success. These questions are good for business because they force us to answer to them! What seems like a threat is actually a good push to continue innovating, refining what you stand for, who you serve, why you exist! Without competition, we’d all be average. But our competitors get us to push our boundaries – just like athletes. Without Steve Prefontain, where would we be?!?
