1. What is your business?
I’m the Founder and CEO of Women Empowered, an organization that connects, educates and supports women of all ages and backgrounds, and inspires them to give back to their communities through mentorship, networking and volunteerism. We host monthly events that include networking mixers, workshops, community service days, group mentoring activities, and more.
2. Why did you launch this business?
I was brought up in an oppressive culture where women’s voices were not heard. You are seen but not heard and image is everything. I broke out of that when I decided to leave an unhappy marriage and soon after decided to start an organization that empowers women to do the same; that is to find their voice and build self-confidence while in a supportive environment. I believe once you have those things intact anything is possible. When women come together as opposed to against one another, something really powerful happens. I’ve seen it and this is what inspires me every day.
3. What gives you your greatest pleasure in your business?
My greatest pleasure is watching other women grow and believe in themselves.
4. Where have you run into challenges in your business?
The biggest challenge as with any business is bringing in the revenue. It becomes harder when running a nonprofit. There’s a misconception that nonprofits are a different species but in actuality we have to run like any other for profit business.
5. What is a key resource that has helped you and might also help other business owners?
I made the best decision I could’ve possibly made for my organization when I decided to hire a brand manager, Laurel Mintz of Elevate My Brand. As with many nonprofit founders, we have the vision, passion, and know we want to make a difference but may sometimes lack the business savvy-ness; or at least I did. I am constantly learning and being inspired by Laurel. Finding the support you need as an entrepreneur and the right team in place makes a world of difference. You can’t do it alone.
