1. What is your business?
EcoRico is an eco-lifestyle brand that promotes holistic health for people and planet. We feature an online cooking show con sabor, EcoSexy video tips, our blog – “Giselle’s Diary”- and all kinds of eco-edutainment. We’re launching an organic line of Adobo all-purpose seasonings soon.
At EcoRico we believe you can look good, feel good and eat good while you do good. We believe that happy people don’t want to blow up the planet, they want to save it. To that end, we think fun is a prerequisite to spreading our message and promoting people, products, services and companies that help create a more environmentally sustainable presence on our glorious planet. That’s why I dance salsa in my kitchen while I cook my eco-licious island-flava food!
EcoRico is the featured food channel at John Leguizamo’s UrbanoTV and a featured food channel on ifood.tv. I blog as an eco and food expert for Decisive Latino Magazine. Our online content is airing on television as a half hour show in Houston, Texas in over 2 million households and soon in Puerto Rico as well.
I’m actively pitching the show to networks and have recently created a food and travel show that complements the in-home show.
2. Why did you launch this business?
I was very disillusioned with my life. For years I toiled in the entertainment industry writing and acting. I was also an environmental steward. I had no idea how to marry my passion with my purpose, until a fateful evening in a car dancing salsa with my dear friend on the way home from an all-day business coaching. The Divine Download came – EcoRico. My friend and I screamed. I instantly saw the first two episodes. Within 16 days those episodes were written, produced, directed and shot. Everything snowballed from there. It was the perfect marriage of my skills as a content creator and my mission to help the world. I like to say: I’m simply the vessel. And I am. I am deeply passionate about what I do. I’m grateful every day that I am open enough to receive the downloads.
3. What gives you your greatest pleasure in your business?
I LOVE the reaction my content receives from people who watch the show. They are inspired, motivated and ready to make my recipes and do what they can to change their lives for the betterment of those around them and the planet. I lOVE when people are engaged, having fun and laughing. I LOVE seeing the final product, whether it’s a highlight reel that took me 3 weeks to edit or a blog post that gets 20 comments on Facebook or a personal quote that gets retweeted. Those responses fuel my passion!
4. Where have you run into challenges in your business?
Starting a business from the ground up is the challenge. The process can be incredibly overwhelming. The sacrifices can be daunting. I do so much and I’m a Mom. I knew absolutely nothing about running a business when this adventure began. And now, I take for granted things I couldn’t describe 6 months ago. I just find the information I need; I ask my friends and colleagues; I reach out for help. Cause, God knows I need it! Nonetheless, despite any obstacle, I HAVE NO DOUBT. I KNOW in my bones, in my soul, with every breath that what I’m doing has MEANING and I LOVE IT!
5. What is a key resource that has helped you and might also help other business owners?
Lisa Elia of Lisa Elia PR is my secret weapon. I adore, respect and honor this woman and her team. And she’s a SMARTY! I can’t stress enough how important it is to have PR. Each interview and article strengthens my resolve. I see in black and white or hear on the radio or see on video my message being spread. PR is critical. Also, Lisa has been instrumental in keeping me focused, organized and structured. I need that structure and accountability to keep me grounded.
My agent came to be from a friend of a friend. Someone simply did me a kindness and said “hey, check out my friend’s show.” Three months later I was in NYC interviewing with major networks.
And finally, my friends, all entrepreneurs who support my work and my mission are amazingly generous with their time and advice. It would all be much more difficult without their love and support. I send them virtual gratitude.
