1. What is your business?
tbwap is a free weekday e-mail newsletter and community website for moms. This is international (being pregnant or a mom is universal). www.tightbodwithapod.com OR www.tbwap.com
My position is Editor in Chief – Though as a start-up I wear many hats outside of being Editor in Chief which consists of managing our editorial calendar and editing stories – I also play a major role in marketing (helping increase our subscriber database, search for fit moms with a biz sense to chat about, find brands/products for interview and giveaways, look for credible contributors to write for us, help style photo shoots, cook + test and help our sales rep reach out to the best mommy focused brands for our site, which tbwap approves.
2. Why did you launch this business?
My friend, our in-house trainer Melissa Heuser, started this business as a door-to-door service on the fitness side only in the OC! Once she had a baby then followed up with another baby within 11 months of her first, we (my husband and I) decided to take this online since her time was obviously limited – We found this a necessity, since there was a void in this type of community/newsletter and site online – we wanted to reach more moms and moms-to-be since the message we were delivering is so important.
3. What gives you your greatest pleasure in your business?
Knowing that my tips/ideas are being read by other moms and implemented into their daily lives where possible. Also, knowing that my kitchen experiment “Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies” is one the highest visited recipes on our site! I was tired of making bread with super ripe bananas, so I tried a new recipe and experimented until I had a new ripe banana option! http://blog.tightbodwithapod.com/banana-chip-cookies/
4. Where have you run into challenges in your business?
Our biggest challenge to date is acquiring more subscribers organically – Spending money on each acquisition is easy, but being on a budget and spreading the word via PR and word-of-mouth has been our number one challenge to date.
5. What is a key resource that has helped you
The WordPress blog platform, helped us grow from a small user-based community to a full-fledged website. WordPress offers options that many other blog platforms could not offer.
